Happy 151st Canada Day!

Jul 1, 2018 | 7:24 AM

There is plenty to see and do for Canada Day in the North Okanagan.

Hopefully the weather will hold out, with showers in the forecast.

Vernon’s event is in Polson Park.

Activities will start at 10 am, and will include the opening ceremonies and cake cutting starting at 1 pm.

“We are excited to announce extreme motocross, ATV rides, a freestyle skateboard competition are back again and new this year will be the first annual bicycle and scooter decorating contest and parade” says NOCDS president Dave Frost.

Frost says people can also enjoy a variety of stage events along with food vendors, a dunk tank, mini golf, military display by the BC Dragoons and carnival games presented by Emmanuel Baptist Church.

“Special thank you to Dump Runz, Black and McDonald, Olympia Cycle and Ski, Vernon Volkswagen, Pinnacle Renewable Energy, Okanagan Restoration Services, and Brown’s Social House whose generous community minded support enable events like this to continue,” says Frost.

Fireworks at 10:30 pm

Fireworks will cap off the day from Kin Beach on Okanagan Lake.

Four RV4 aerobatic planes — known as the Snowflakes — will make several passes over that area around 9:15 pm.

Okanagan Skydive will also be attempting a large group formation and landing at the Vernon Airport following the Snowflakes fly-over.

The fireworks show — presented by Craftsman Collision — will start at 10:30, set off from barges on Okanagan Lake

Best viewing sites include Paddlewheel Park, Kin Beach, Bench Road, Bella Vista and Lakeshore roads.

People can listen to choreographed music which will be broadcast on 107.5 Beach Radio during the show.

“It must be a direct FM radio reception rather than cell phone or other online play to be synchronized correctly due to internet delays,” says the organizing committee.

Additional parking is available at Marshall field which is a short walk from the Lakeshore road viewing area

Volunteer cleanup is scheduled for the morning following the fireworks with Vernon Yacht Club and area volunteers.

Innerspace Diving will be doing a cleanup of sunken debris following the show.
