Community Foundation Grants Set Record

Jun 5, 2018 | 6:50 AM

The Community Foundation of the North Okanagan has handed over 140-thousand dollars in grants to local charities and groups.

The foundation’s executive director Leanne Hammond confirmed it is a record amount.

“In the last few years we’ve progressed from about 80-thousand (dollars). Last year, we broke through 100,000 for the first time,” said Hammond. “This year, we gave out 141-thousand so we are certainly increasing our impact in this community grant cycle.”

The biggest donation this spring has gone to a new program called Cycling Without Age — being done in conjunction with the Schubert Centre.

“It’s kind of like a reverse rickshaw where (seniors and the disabled) are wheeled around by somebody, a volunteer, and that will help people go and enjoy the rail who otherwise might not be able to.”

Hammond says the smallest donation went to Hope Outreach — which helps women living on the streets.
