Vernon Council Delivers Thousands in Discretionary Grants

May 30, 2018 | 7:11 AM

Eight groups will be getting discretionary grants from the City of Vernon — while another 12 are not so fortunate.

Abbeyfield Houses and and the North Okanagan Youth and Family Services got the biggest grants, both at 15-thousand dollars.

Councilor Brian Quiring questioned why the Kokanee Swim Club was denied a 33-hundred dollar request.

“All those people pay a lot of money for their kids to swim, and they pay rec centre fees,” commented Quiring.

Mayor Akbal Mund says if they start providing grants to sports groups, they will be inundated with requests from others.

“Every sports organization will come to the City, looking for a grant, for something, so we have to pick and choose,” said Mund.
