Armstrong Stratas Upset Over Increases In Water Taxes

May 30, 2018 | 6:53 AM

The City of Armstrong plans a couple of Open House meetings to talk about sewer and parcel taxes for stratas.

Those taxes are going up, but stratas are upset, with one complaining it will see an increase of 354 per cent year over year.

Mayor Chris Pieper says there are inequities with how it’s been handled in the past.

“Strata with 50 units in it has had one parcel tax of a hundred dollars. So, the amount that they paid for water was two dollars per unit. Everywhere else in town they’ve paid a hundred dollars each.”

Pieper says you shouldn’t read too much into percentages in the hundreds because it’s all relative.

“Percentage increases sometimes don’t give the true, uh, when you’re paying two dollars for something and you go to three dollars that’s a six hundred per cent increase. So you have to look at the dollar value.”

Pieper says he’s confident the city and the stratas can work something out.

An Open House will be held this evening at 6:30 at the firehall to explain the procedure.
