Coldstream Has Questions About RDNO Process

Coldstream Council is holding off on approving a process to raise money for a new building for Vernon Search and Rescue.

The regional district proposes an Alternative Approval Process to seek borrowing up to 3.5 million dollars for that.

Coldstream Mayor Jim Garlick says councillors aren’t ready to jump into that pool.

“Some council members felt that the AAP process, they’d rather see a referendum. Others said that they would support the AAP because it is a very good organization and needed in the area.”

Garlick says it’s possible a referendum could be held at the same time of civic elections.

“We do have an election this October and a referendum could be held during that election time, and could be fit in with the election to cut down on costs. So those comments were passed forward. A decision has not been made by Coldstream.”

He says there are other questions.

“The service area that Vernon Search and Rescue provides for is really outside of the regional district as well. They go beyond our bounds, and just making sure there’s some cost recovery from the province.”

Garlick says he thinks some little things need to be cleaned up as the organization’s structure becomes more mainstream.

However, Garlick says if Coldstream is the only holdout, council won’t stand in the way.
