Lumby Mayor Wants Marijuana Considered In Smoking Bylaw

Lumby Council is going to take another look at its smoking bylaw.

Mayor Kevin Acton has tried in the past to have public smoking illegal in Lumby, but failed.

He’s received a letter from Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth that he finds unclear.

“It does not look like the province is going to make it illegal to smoke marijuana sort of like on the sidewalks. As long as you’re not where kids frequent or in front of any other places where smoking’s not allowed it’s going to be good enough for them.”

He says if that’s the case, then council needs to look at having its own bylaw preventing that.

“I have a lot of concerns about being able to smoke marijuana walking down the sidewalks or on streets where kids don’t frequent but that they simply may be riding their bike or walking with their parents.”

Acton says he’s confident a happy medium can be found.

“And I’m really hoping that we can find a way to keep this away from kids and from people that don’t want to be part of it and allow people that do want to be part of it to have their freedom.”

Farnworth’s letter remind the Mayor local governments, under existing powers to establish bylaws, have the authority to further restrict public consumption of cannabis if they choose to do so.
