Enderby Comfortable With Shuswap Flood Watch

The River Forecast Centre says it’s keeping a flood watch on the Shuswap and Salmon Rivers.

But Enderby Mayor Greg McCune says while the Shuswap is running high, everything looks okay.

He says the city has been getting good data that has been bang on so far.

“The city’s pretty calm. We’re watching the weather. we’re watching that data. It is starting to recede a little bit now. They told us that would start on Monday and it is.We should see that through to probably Friday – Saturday.”

He says if there is rain on Sunday, there may be a small increase but it shouldn’t be anything substantial.

What is being seen now mostly is seepage.

“You know we have a lot of ground water that makes its way to the river to try to get in there. Well, when the river’s full it comes up in fields and ditches. So the majority of, I think the excess water we have now, is sitting in a field or a ditch.”

McCune says anyone who has been affected in the past has taken steps to alleviate that.

He’s comfortable the high mountain snowpack won’t be an issue.

“Even the heat, you know on a place that’s probably only 3 or 4 degrees overnight, you know it takes a fair bit. So that doesn’t come down as fast as the lower lying stuff”

Most of that is down already.

McCune says the city is cautiously, quietly monitoring the situation.
