Coldstream Section Of Rail Trail Could Open Soon

June is being targeted for a soft opening for the north end of the Okanagan Rail Trail.

The trail is currently closed, although people have still been using it.

RDNO board chair Bob Fleming says a key part of the preparations is close to completion.

“It looks like we’ve had sign-off from the agricultural land commission and all the element they were weighing in on. We have information on what we need to do. There’s a little bit of fencing that needs to be put up in our area. I don’t think there’s much more than that.”

Fleming says the opening will likely be regional, as he doesn’t think Kelowna is ready with its section.

“They’ve still got a bunch of work going on in sections. It’s related to the road work, so the highway construction is actually using portions of the rail right of way for staging materials and so on.”

Fleming says board members agree on the need for a way to get public input on the trail.

“We’re looking at trying to get a community stakeholder group that might advise for the future development of the trail, and working on the governance between the owners, Kelowna, Lake Country, RDNO and the OKIB.”
