Levels Holding In Local Communities

A glimmer of good news for two of the local communities most in danger of flooding.

Jeremy Sundin, chief financial officer from the village of Lumby, said late Thursday afternoon, the situation there was remaining stable.

“We’re pleased the creek levels have not increased. We did go ahead and closed the campground. It’s required to be closed, even without the increase,” Sundin tells Beach Radio News.

One-hundred and-60 homes and businesses along the creeks in Lumby remain on evacuation alert.

Sundin says their supplies of filled sandbags are dwindling, with only a few thousand left.

“It’s nearing depletion. That’s really because we make them available to area residents, not just Lumby. We’ve been in touch with EMBC (Emergency Management BC) and we’re trying to get another crew here to assist in creating some more sandbags,” adds Sundin.

In Armstrong, emergency program coordinator Warren Smith said late Thursday, they had seen some minor reductions in Meighan Creek, partly due to more favourable weather, but he says they still have a long way to go before people can relax.

“We still have a considerable amount of time to get through this freshet. You can’t put a timeline on it to say it’s going to be three days, four days, two weeks. We just don’t know,” says Smith.

Sixty homes along the creek remain on evacuation alert.
