Another Medical Marijuana Facility Proposed For Lumby

May 9, 2018 | 6:18 AM

Lumby Council is dealing with a new application for another medical marijuana facility.

A company called Marigold Acres is asking council to rezone land at the corner of Mountain View Avenue and Highway 6 from Residential Low Density to General Industrial.

Acting Mayor Nick Hodge says that would mean a change to the Official Community Plan.

“It is a large piece of property. It’s directly before you come to the first intersection leading into the residential area and the access to the property would be on that same street, from that same street.”

The property is 9.7 hectares.

Marigold wants to grow, process and sell cannabis and cannabis oils from the proposed production facility.

Hodge says the proposal poses some questions.

“The conflict between wanting to support economic development in the community and the other value is this is the entrance to the community.”

He says there would be some questions as to what that would like like.

Then there’s the question of losing residential land.

“We need more residential area, not less. We’re struggling here with housing.”

The current bylaw allowing legal medical marijuana growing facilities restricts them to General Industrial.

True Leaf Medicinal International is building in the industrial park.

Nick Hodge says a public information meeting will be held to get the community’s views on this latest proposal.
