Snowmelt Watch For Coldstream Creek To Kal Lake

The warmer temperatures now mean the mountain snowmelt is going to go a little faster.

It’s hoped night time temperatures will remain cool enough to allow it to be gradual.

Coldstream Mayor Jim Garlick notes Coldstream Creek has started to come up but Kal Lake is still low.

He’s hoping for little rain over the next couple of months.

“What that can do is speed up the melting of the snow on the mountains and it can impact the flow into the lake. Kal Lake has a lot of groundwater coming into it.”

Garlick says excessive ground water was the major issue for Kal Lake last year.

“When we looked at the actual measurement of the creek flow from Coldstream Creek and the outflow from Vernon Creek there it didn’t add up, that we were finding that a lot of water must have been coming in through ground water sources, springs and that into the lake.”

Meanwhile, the Mayor says the District still has no idea when the pier at Kal Beach can
repaired.

Garlick says the Regional District’s insurance agency hasn’t finished its assessment on what needs to be done.

“We will then have to get a contractor in to do it, but no promises that it can be done this year because there’s a lot of things that are out of our hands with the insurance company and that that they need to take care of.”

Garlick has said whenever the work is done, the pier could have a different look to make sure its rebuilt to to withstand the type of wave action it encountered last year.
