Big 30th Street Infrastructure Project Underway Today

Apr 23, 2018 | 6:44 AM

Work begins today on the City of Vernon’s largest capital project of the year.

Infrastructure manager Mark Dowhaniuk says the 2 million dollar upgrade is centred at the intersection by the RCMP and Fire Services building, site of a current four way stop.

“It’s a new traffic signal at 35th Avenue and 30th Street, and multi use pathways along 30th Street and also along 35th Avenue in front of Beairsto School,” Dowhaniuk tells Beach Radio News.

Dowhaniuk says it’s the next phase of the north-south route on 29th and 30th Streets.

“And then we’re going to make the connection up and across the railways tracks at the Civic (Arena) block, so there will be another new intersection at 39th Avenue, 30th Street and 29th.”

Dowhaniuk says once completed, the route will link Polson Park with the Village Green Centre.

“We’re definitely seeing increased traffic volume there now, but when
we make the final connection next year, we’re expecting a significant increase along that whole route.”

30th Street will be closed from 35th to 37th avenues, with the project to continue through the summer.
