Vernon RespectFest Getting Respect

Jan 24, 2018 | 7:08 AM

Officials are pleased with how RespectFest 2017 went in Vernon.

The week long event in September celebrated diversity and multiculturalism with 40 events.

Annette Sharkey from the Social Planning Council says it was a huge project.

“As with any project we hit a few bumps along the way, but we were really excited with the final results, and really happy that we had that many community members engaged,” Sharkey told Vernon council.

Sharkey says over 7-thousand people took part in the live events, and close to 500 volunteers helped out.

She says it’s left a legacy in the community, with more to come.

“There is a public art piece that, in the spring, will be installed. It’s ready to go. We’re just waiting for weather and the final location.”
