Vernon Council Hearing Views On Pot Shops

Jan 22, 2018 | 7:18 AM

Vernon council will get input on the future of pot dispensaries in the city at a public hearing tonight.

Mayor Akbal Mund says the plan is to allow the existing 12 shops to operate using a temporary use permit, which will allow the city to inspect them, and and to not allow any new dispensaries.

“I’m sure you’ll have representatives of the dispensaries, people who don’t want dispensaries, to people who use medicinal products, so I think we’ll see a wide variety,” Mund tells Beach Radio News.

Mund says some communities aren’t allowing the dispensaries to operate, but the stores are staying open, creating possible legal fights.

He says Vernon has chosen to wait for provincial regulations to be issued.

“That will set the standards of what we can and can not do.”

Mund expects to see a packed council chambers for the hearing which starts at 5:30 pm.

“This is a chance for everybody to make their statement,” he says.
