How True to Real Radio was ‘WKRP in Cincinnati’

In our business we sometimes still get asked about how true was the popular sitcom ‘WKRP’ in real life radio.

So where am I going with this? Hugh Wilson, the award-winning director and creator of ‘WKRP in Cincinnati’ has died.

Now, about how accurate it is…it really all depends on who in this business you ask.

If you talk to announcers…the Herb Tarlek, Sales Manager character, is pretty much bang on.

…if you talk to a Sales Manager, he or she will say the announcers are pretty much all like Johnny Fever.

If you ask an announcer about the News reporter, everybody probably has worked with a Les Nessman and most guys wish they had worked with a Bailey.

Whereas most female announcers would probably have loved to have an Andy Travis as a Program Director.

Now as far as Mr. Carlson the lovably inept General Manager…well you’ll just have to ask your favourite announcer that.

Hugh Wilson died Jan. 14 at his home in Charlottesville, Virginia at age 74.
