Salvation Army Helping Women

Jan 15, 2018 | 7:23 AM

With it’s Christmas campaign over, the Salvation Army in Vernon is putting it’s focus on its regular programming.

One of the initiatives is a breakthrough program for women that returns for its next stage.

Lieutenant Stefan Reid says it’s aimed at helping women transition back into workforce.

“If they have lost a loved one or if they’re now a single parent and things like that. It’s a very encouraging group.”

The program includes bringing nurses in to help women learn how to take care of their children and help women feel better about themselves.

The current session has more than 10 people in it and people are changing their lives because of it.

“We have one lady who has three kids and she just got a job again just because of some life skills she learned in our program here.”

He says, as in the other programs they run, participants don’t have to be members of the Salvation Army, and most aren’t.

Former participants are also brought in to tell their stories.

“They’ve come in and done sessions themselves to help people understand that, you know what, this program works. I’m a graduate of this program and I’m here to tell you my story, my testimony, and I’m here to tell you how this really changed my life.”

He says the success rate is about 75 per cent.

There are also programs for youth and the Army expects to begin a new weekend men’s program shortly.
