Vernon Takes Over Camp Hurlburt

Jan 11, 2018 | 7:55 AM

Camp Hurlburt on Okanagan Lake has a new name — and new owner.

The regional district is transferring title of the beach on Eastside Road to the City of Vernon, which is renaming it Hurlburt Park.

Mayor Akbal Mund says the park has been open to the public for a couple of years, but they plan to upgrade it by end of the summer.

“We’ll be working on the parking issue there. There is things that need to be done. RDNO agrees it would be better left in the City of Vernon’s hands to do all the work,” Mund tells Beach Radio

Mund says the city will be upgrading other amenities over time.

“And I know over the last couple of years since RDNO bought it, it’s been packed with cars parked along the road, all the way down. And that’s why we want to mitigate any accidents happening out there by putting parking on site.”

The United Church sold the 2.5 acre site to the regional district in 2015.

As part of the transfer, the church will have exclusive access to the park for one day each summer.
