Grant Kick-Starts Flood Prevention Work

The City of Armstrong is preparing to take a look at improvements to Meighan Creek.

Flooding along the creek last spring left a lot of damage in the region and much needs to be done to prevent future issues.

Mayor Chris Pieper says some minor maintenance will be done first.

“We approved that in our public works budget. We don’t know exactly what we’ve got to do, but first is an assessment on a couple of other minor things, then it will come back to us for budgeting purposes.”

The city has also obtained a 79 thousand dollar provincial planning grant for flood risk assessment, mitigation and mapping.

Mayor Pieper says it will help evaluate Meighan Creek and Deep Creek to try to prevent future flooding.

“We have to have something to start on, to plan on, to budget on, and this will give us that opportunity and we’re really grateful to get this from the provincial government.”

The city will now start looking for a consultant to work on an action plan.

“This is a very cross-jurisdictional assessment that has to be done. It’s complicated. One person can’t repair part of a creek to flood out somebody else, so that’s what this will help us do.”

Both deep Creek and Meighan Creek will be studied.

Pieper notes they both go through many different parts of municipalities from Armstrong through Spallumcheen and Okanagan Indian Band lands to Okanagan Lake.
