Update on Flag Person Hit By Car

The owner of an Okanagan traffic control company says it’s been hard for staff to get back to work today — after one of their colleagues suffered serious injuries last week.

A 66 year old flag person was hit by a car in a construction zone on Highway 6 near School Road in Lavington Friday,

The woman remains in hospital in critical but stable condition with head injuries.

Police are still investigating the case and if charges will result against the 75 year old driver who was apparently unable to stop in time.

Traci Jeeves, owner of Okanagan Traffic Control Professionals, says drivers have to be more aware.

“That’s what were faced with everyday, is drivers just like this one, you know, running down a stop sign, and that’s exactly what happened. And that’s really hard for us to deal with because we’re all  experienced, mindful flag people. It’s making us a little gun shy to step back out there,” Jeeves tells Kiss FM.

Jeeves says even though it was a result of driver error, she expects it will lead to WorkSafe BC coming down on them.

“It’s going to make it really hard to move forward because they are going to find fault with what we do everyday and how we stay stay. But she was in a regulation site, she was following the rules, and she did have lots of experience (37 years), so it was just a terrible accident,” adds Jeeves who says the company has been inundated with calls from people wanting to know how the woman is doing.

The injured woman was celebrating her 66th birthday on the day it happened.
