Careful Process For Modular Housing Tenants

It will be sometime next year when the John Howard Society starts considering who could live in the planned new supportive housing complex.

Co executive director Kelly Fehr says they’re looking at next November to open the 53 modular units at a site on 27th Ave at 35 Street, west of the People Place.

He says they’ll be looking for homeless residents who are the most ready to move into transition housing.

“Some will require minimal support while some will require daily support. it could be anything fro budgeting to cooking. We’re going to make sure we partner with other outside agencies so we can maximize the use of the space,” Fehr tells Kiss FM.

Vernon will be following Vancouver as the second BC community to include modular housing as part of a solution to address homelessness.

Meantime, a Vernon councillor is hopeful recent BC Housing funding to address homelessness in the city, is just the start of a successful partnership between the city and the province.

Juliette Cunningham says the new modular shelter and supportive housing complex announced last week, will help get about 100 people off the streets, but she says it won’t end the ongoing need for affordable housing.

“Signing this MOU (memorandum of understanding between City and province) just opens up the opportunities for us to address it at that level as well because it’s a whole spectrum of housing we have to provide that goes right from a homeless shelter to non market housing and low price market housing,”‘says Cunningham.

The province is investing 11 million dollars into the two facilities, with the 45 bed shelter expected to open in March, and the 53 unit housing complex targeted for next fall.
