Coldstream Pub To Expand & Other Council News

Coldstream council has granted a development permit for an expansion at Alexander’s Pub.

The plan is for a 2,100 square foot kitchen addition to the business on Kalamalka Road.

Mayor Jim Garlick says there were a couple of provisions, including the pub agreeing to improving its landscaping.

“There’s some dead trees that they had along there that residents have complained about. There’s an area where they keep their garbage that they’re going to change the location of so neighbouring residents aren’t affected so much by it.”

The expansion wraps around the east corner of the building, along the front and southeast side and won’t affect the nearby riparian area.

There was some concern about how parking might be restructured affecting residences but council is satisfied there won’t be any challenges.

Meanwhile, council agreed to a financing bylaw to help with new hookups to the sewer system.

Sewer lines were already installed through the town centre to the east end of the District.

Mayor Garlick says the bylaw will help people with the cost.

“I believe it was one per cent over prime and then they you can choose the amount of time you pay it out over, like 15 years or 20 years so you can make it less onerous on you.”

Garlick says there is interest in new hookups.

In areas where there is mandatory hookup, the district isn’t charging for the connection on the municipality’s side.

The value of building permits in Coldstream in October reached over 2 million dollars.

That compares with just over 800 thousand for the same period last year.

Nineteen permits were issued, but only three for housing. the rest for renovations and related work.

Mayor Garlick notes there’s not a lot of land left for new construction.

“We’re trying to see if we can avoid having to leap out further into the valley into ALR land and that by
looking at what we have in place already with services, sewer and water and such.”

Garlick says Coldstream isn’t so much focused on growth as it is maintaining the services they already have and enjoying a certain quality of life.
