Leave Pets At Home

Pet owners reminded not to leave furry friends in cars

As temperatures are on the rise, the Regional District of Central Okanagan is reminding people not to leave their pets in vehicles.

The RDCO says temperatures inside vehicles can climb significantly, even when parked in the shade, and within 10 minutes the mercury can reach to levels that can seriously harm or kill a pet.

“Even if it’s a quick trip into the store, it’s not worth the risk,” the RDNO stated in a release.

“It also pays to keep fido at home. Under the Responsible Dog Ownership bylaw, anyone who is found in violation of leaving a dog in an enclosed vehicle without adequate shade or ventilation could be fined $500.”

The RDCO added that leaving the car running to keep the air conditioning on is not an acceptable alternative to leaving a pet at home, stating idling is against some jurisdiction’s bylaws and it still puts the pet at risk if the AC malfunctions.

People who see a pet in a hot care are reminded not to break a window, as only RCMP and SPCA Special Constables are lawfully allowed to enter a vehicle with an animal in need. Instead, people should call the SPCA Animal Helpline at 1-855-622-7722, or, in an emergency, dial 911.
