Tomi Ouchi

Dec 23, 1937 – Nov 24, 2021

It is with heartfelt sadness we announce the passing of Tomi Ouchi at Vernon Jubilee Hospital, after a battle with Breast Cancer, with her family by her side.

Tomi was born in Inverness Cannery along the Skeena River and due to the Japanese Canadian Internment, moved to Hastings Park then New Denver and Roseberry. Eventually the family moved to Fintry and then settled in Vernon.

Being community minded, she volunteered for many organizations: Vernon Jubilee Hospital Auxiliary, United Church, Pythian Sisters, Vernon Kokanees, Queen Silver Star, to name a few. The highlight of her volunteering career was becoming the Grand Chief with the Pythian Sisters and VJH Auxiliary President in 2002 & 2003. She was always the friendly face at the Hospital gift shop and any event she attended.

Her outgoing personality and competitiveness were evident during bowling league at Lincoln Lanes & various food and beverage demos.

Tomi is survived by her husband, Yosh of 59 years, children; Janice (Mike) Buick, Kurt (Robynne), Darren (Maddison) grandchildren; Amayah & Noriko, Sisters; Nobby Fukushima & Fudge Ikeda as well as numerous extended family members and close family friends. She was predeceased by her parents, Shinnojyo & Sumi Hamazaki; brothers, Nobby & Kobe Hamazaki; sisters, Shiz Miyazaki & Tosh Terada and son, Tyler.

The family would like to thank all the VJH & Community Care staff for taking care of Tomi. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Vernon Jubilee Hospital Foundation or the Vernon Japanese Cultural Society.

Due to COVID there will not be a service at this time.
