It is with great sadness that we announce Pieter Stuyt, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and long time resident of North Fork Road, Cherryville, B.C. has died after a courageous battle with cancer.
Pieter is predeceased by his wife Penelope Marie Stuyt, Father (Nicolaas Johannes Stuijt), Mother (Guurtruida Johanna de Leeuw) of Obdam, Netherlands, sisters Engelien and Margareth and brothers Kees, Jan, Joop, Nico, Martien and Paul (Netherlands).
Pieter is survived by his brother Gus Stuyt, his daughters Margaret (Carie) Benson of Enderby, B.C. and Angel (Lance) Gotzy of Nelson, B.C. and his sons Guy Stuyt of Kaslo, Mark (Sharka) Stuyt of North Vancouver, Scott Stuyt of Surrey, B.C. and Shawn Stuyt of Terrace, B.C., as well as stepdaughter Marci-Lynn (Shawn) Gilarowski of Ottawa, Ontario. He is also survived by his grandchildren Allashua Gilarowski, Aiden Benson, Lucas, Kylan, and Amber Stuyt, and Ella and Alex Gotzy.
Peter embarked on a courageous journey from the Netherlands to Canada in 1956 to build a life in a new country, which led to rewarding work in the nursery and construction industries, and a home in White Rock, B.C. In the late 1970’s Pieter and his wife Penny moved to Cherryville, B.C. where Pieter worked for many years on the Revelstoke dam project, while slowly converting an old log cabin into a modern dream home to accommodate the many friends and family who came to visit from all over the world.
Pieter was defined by his ability to build (almost) anything and was most comfortable with a shovel, a hammer or a book in his hand, which equipped him to fix anything and solve almost any problem. He was deeply curious about everything (life, systems, theories) and, being Dutch, always open to sharing his knowledge and opinions. He knew a lot about some things, and a little about everything else. Pieter’s unusual insights, sense of humour and willingness to always lend a hand will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
