December 18, 1918 – March 20, 2020
It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Mary Edwards Crerar, 20 March 2020, at Creekside Landing Care Home, Vernon, BC. Mary was 101 years, three months and 2 days old.
Mary was born in London, England to Elizabeth Scott Bessie and shortly thereafter immigrated to Canada at the age of six months. Mary, her mother and step father David Johnson Edwards originally settled in Maymont, SK, a small farming community. Over the next few years, the family grew with the addition of step sisters Elsie(Gordon) and Kay (Tillman). The family moved to The Pas, MB where Mary finished high school and went to work as a domestic for the mine manager of Gurney Gold Mine, just north of Cranberry Portage, MB. There she met and married Stewart Crerar in 1939. Over the next 16 years they were to raise 10 children: Norman (Nancy) Vernon, BC; Betty (Bob-deceased) Coquitlam, BC; Marjorie Brewer (Clark) Vernon, BC, David (Alison) Vernon, BC; Robert, deceased (Katayoon, Montreal); Myfawny McIntosh (Ron-deceased) Sudbury, ON; Dorothy Wasylenko (Jim-deceased) Ft St James, BC; Ivy Miller (Dan) Rossland, BC; Raymond (Joanne) Calgary, AB; Marilyn Ray (Larry-deceased) Worsley, AB. Mary was predeceased by her husband Stewart in 1975.
Mary, or Ma as she was known around Flin Flon, had many interests, besides being a full time homemaker, raising her own children, she would have a hand in baby sitting and help raise many others in the town. As well, Ma was a consummate volunteer and would be awarded the Rotary International Paul Harris Award and the Flin Flon Lifetime Achievement Award, the latter for her stewardship, hospitality and volunteer service for the Flin Flon Ski Club. The road link to the ski club is named “Ma Crerar Way”.
Respecting Mary’s final wishes, ashes will be scattered at some of her favourite places in
Flin Flon, Manitoba, Ft St James, BC and Vernon, BC.
Services and celebrations of life are planned for the summer of 2020.
