On November 18th, 2021, Mable Evelyn Davies (94) passed away peacefully with loved ones by her side. She will be remembered as a beloved mother, grandmother, and dear friend to many. She is survived by her 4 children, Trevor and wife Bettina, Sally, Kirk and Marney, her grandchildren Abe, Nat, Harlan, Bart, and Levi, her two brothers Stan (Pat) and Don (Val), and sister-in-law Peg as well as their children respectively, and her very dear friend Jack. Mable was preceded in death by Trevor (her late husband) and her brother Ken.
Mable was always ready and willing to help, and went above and beyond for her family and friends. You could often find her behind her sewing machine fixing pants for a neighbor down the hall, knitting slippers to make sure everyone’s feet were warm, or in her kitchen cooking dishes to share. She was a hard worker who would fearlessly take on any DIY project regardless of how challenging it may be, earning her the nickname “Mable-what-can’t-she-do”. To the horror of her children, this at times meant getting on the roof to fix the gutters or climbing up a ladder to help paint into late hours of the night. She often used the phrase “count your blessings” and she was one to all that knew her.
Mable grew up in Fort Gary Winnipeg, She later married Trevor Francis Davies and they moved to Charleswood where they raised their children. Eventually she returned to Fort Gary where she worked at the University of Manitoba. She invited everyone into her home and kept her jar of mints full, always wanting to make sure everyone felt welcome. Her family lived all over the globe, but her place always felt like home. Eventually she settled in Vernon, and enjoyed spending time with nearby family and friends, especially Jack and her adoptive family Cathy, Ross, Amy, and Jaden.
One of her favourite pastimes was playing cribbage, through which she taught humility to everyone she played (she didn’t lose). She also loved her daily walks and took great pride in her self-sufficiency. Though there was relentless effort to provide her with support in her later years, she was determined and smart, some may even go as far as to say a wee bit stubborn. She lived her life the way she wanted to, as a strong and independent woman born before her time. We would like to thank Cindy a caregiver and friend for helping to allow Mable to keep that independence this last while, she popped in daily with a snack, some groceries and always time for a game or two of crib. Cindy gave us peace of mind as she kept an eye on things for us.
During this difficult time, she would have told us to count our blessings, and one of the greatest blessings was knowing her.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Vernon Funeral Home, 250-542-0155. Condolences can be left at www.vernonfuneralhome.com.
