Larry Bennetto
November 10, 1929 – December 31, 2020
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Larry Bennetto on Dec 31, 2020 at the age of 91. He was a loving father of 4: Jack (Diana) Bennetto, Marsha (Dave Thompson), Dawn (David) Poggemiller, Murray (Dimple) Bennetto; grandfather of 7 and great grandfather of 3. He was predeceased by his wife Helen in 2004.
Larry was born Nov 10, 1929 in Maple Creek, and grew up on the family farm in Piapot, Saskatchewan. He met and married his love, Helen in 1962. Together he helped her raise “four very fine people”. No matter what life threw at him, Larry never gave up. He was born at the start of the Great Depression and survived an oil refinery fire as a young man. He had various careers in his lifetime in Saskatchewan, Alberta and finally in BC. In 1969, he settled the family in Vernon and began his award-winning career in Real Estate. He enjoyed his open houses and helping people find their dream homes. He always went above and beyond when working to buy or sell real estate. He retired at an amazing age and when asked why he was still working, he would reply, “What else would I do?”
Larry was instrumental in planning green spaces and walking paths around Vernon along with Ribbons of Green. He loved his landscaping and when not selling real estate, he could be found in his beautiful gardens. He was always willing to help friends and family with their yard and building projects. Unknown to most, he was a fine artist. He loved to play tennis and spend time at the Kalamalka Country Club. Larry was always up for an adventure, especially in the great outdoors. He enjoyed his travels with Helen to Asia and Hawaii, as well as family cabin life in Cowichan, Pasayten, and the Okanagan. His rafting trip to the Bonnet Plume in the Mackenzie Mountains in the Yukon was especially close to his heart.
Thank-you to Gateby, Dr. Long, and the medical team of VGH, for their exceptional care and support for Larry in his challenging last few months.
Larry was a gentleman known for his hard work ethic, integrity, determination and undaunting spirit. He will be dearly missed by his family and those who knew him well. Rest in Peace Larry, we love you and already miss you greatly.
There will be no memorial service or flowers at this time, due to the pandemic.
