It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Helen Pesklewis on July 5 2021 at the age of 98. Helen was predeceased by her husband Stan Pesklewis in 2002, brothers George and Bill Yaroslawaky and sister Mary Sleziwsky.
She is survived by her sons Roy (Bonnie) Pesklewis and Randy Pesklewis, grandchildren Jeanne (Jason) Howland and Cody(Kirsten) Pesklewis and great grandchildren Liam and Nathon Howland.
Helen was born on a farm 4 miles north of Smoky Lake, Alberta. It was a quarter section homestead her father got in 1909. Her parents, John and Annie Yaroslawsky, were married in 1912. Growing up was hard for the children they lived in a two room log house that her father built. No running water or power, she walked three miles to school every day. Helen helped on the farm ploughing the fields with harrows behind the oxen, stacking grain sheaves for harvest, working in the garden and doing chores. At a young age her father taught her about God and the church. They were poor but happy.
Helen was a longtime member of the St Josaphat Ukranian Catholic Church in Vernon and was famous for her homemade perogis, and would sell them to raise money for the church.
A funeral mass and burial was held Wednesday July 14th at St Nicholas Cemetery in Coldstream, BC.
GLORY BE TO JESUS.
