It is with much sadness that we announce the passing of Harry Karlson on January 1st, 2021. He suffered from heart disease for many years and is now at peace.
A charter member of the Royal City Sports Car Club, he was well known for his passion for driving and sports cars. He won many trophies racing at Westwood track and throughout the Pacific Northwest.
Harry grew up in Surrey B.C. and attended Queen Elizabeth High School. He graduated from UBC Pharmacy in 1956. After 12 years of retail pharmacy, he went to work at Surrey Memorial Hospital where he became Director of Pharmacy. In 1981 he worked at Lady Minto Hospital on Saltspring Island and then ended his career by working for 10 years at Saint Mary’s Hospital on the Sunshine Coast. Harry retired in 1995. After his wife retired in 2003, they moved to Vernon B.C.
Harry is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Maureen (nee Monk), daughters Christine (Brent) and Sonja (Duncan), and his three grandchildren Glenn, Lauren and Audrey. He also leaves behind his dear sister Marion Hearn who lives in Nanaimo B.C.
Harry is remembered fondly by family and those who got to know and work with him. He was a fun and social person with a good sense of humour. He could be very compassionate and was a wonderful story teller. His car racing stories were engaging and memorable. He was a very smart man and his cognition was impressive right until the end.
Harry Karlson will be missed.
