It is with deep regret we announce the passing of our Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother Anne Hodnik.
Anne was born July 10th, 1940, in Zagreb, Croatia, passed away Saturday, Feb 5th at KGH after a courageous effort to stave off the negative effects of a degenerative disease known as Parkinson’s. She was 81.
Anne is predeceased by her parents, Mijo Siljak and Ljubica Siljak, and her husband Paul Hodnik.
Anne grew up in the war-torn region of Zagreb where she narrowly escaped death on more than one occasion. During this chaotic period Anne became friends with Paul Hodnik prior to Paul immigrating to Canada in 1951. Little did she know Paul would call upon her years later, for her hand in marriage.
Her hesitation was not in marrying Paul. Rather, leaving her cherished mother, family, and the only life she had known. Fortunately, Anne took her mother’s selfless advice to follow her heart and the adventures that lie ahead. Paul truly became the love of her life.
Anne’s resourcefulness allowed her to carry on with the family traditions. This not only enriched the lives of her children, also the community of friends surrounding Anne. Most notable was her love for gardening, hiking, cooking, and challenging her entrepreneurial spirit, negotiating the odd real estate deal.
Anne’s greatest attribute was simply her humility, ‘being there’ for her neighbors and friends when called upon: To which they always responded in kind. She met all of life’s challenges, including her battle with Parkinson’s, with courage and determination. Her courage, faith, and her love of family kept her going to the very end.
Anne is survived by the family she loved, her children Ernie (Connie) Hodnik, Diana Steele, Deborah Hodnik (Jim Carta), and Pauline Hodnik (Jeff Sim); her grandchildren Adam Steele (Ariel), Jordan Steele, Melissa Clarke (Stefan Hoben); Natasha Hodnik, Shawn, Ryan, and Scott Hodnik; and her great grandson Arthur Steele and numerous nieces and nephews
A Graveside Service will take place at Pleasant Valley Cemetery, 4303 Pleasant Valley Road, Vernon B.C. on
