Enderby Likes Ride-Sharing

Jan 9, 2018 | 9:58 AM

The City of Enderby made a presentation yesterday to the all-party committee on ride- sharing.

Councillor Brian Schreiner lead the presentation through teleconference.

Their message was simple.

“Hopefully, It’s a level playing field for small communities is our thing. We don’t have  a taxi service, so that’s what we’re trying to promote that ride sharing would be great for small communities.”

He says smaller cities have different needs than big cities and hopes the committee will take that into account when it prepares its final report.

” Being a small community we don’t have services so people have to travel to Salmon Arm and Vernon and the bus only goes a couple of times a week, so it’s really difficult for so it’s really difficult for those people to get around.”

Councillor Schreiner says it’s particularly hard for seniors when they need to see a doctor or do some shopping.

“Uber or Lyft or some kind of app and also where we could have local people in the community to be drivers.”

Schreiner says it’s difficult for someone to run a taxi service in a small community like Enderby because of the costs involved but a ride-sharing program could provide job opportunities for people who only want to work part-time.

The government committee is expected to have a report next month and legislation on ride -hailing is expected by the end of the year.
