Council Supports Affordable Housing Project

Jan 9, 2018 | 7:00 AM

More affordable housing is in the works for Vernon.

City council has supported the business plan for a development on city owned land at 4005 Pleasant Valley Road, currently a vacant piece of property.

Mayor Akbal Mund says the idea was first introduced by Annette Sharkey of the Social Planning Council over a year ago.

“At the time, the cost didn’t work, so they went back to talk with BC Housing and looked at ways to make this project work,” Mund tells Beach Radio News.

Mund isn’t sure how many units of housing are proposed with more details to be released later.

“We need these in our community, and it’s finally going to come to fruition. Annette is working with BC Housing and they’ve approved the project moving forward.”

The next step will be for council to consider rezoning the property from large lot residential….to four-plex housing residential.
