Civic Arena Still Useful For Awhile

Jan 8, 2018 | 8:12 AM

Vernon’s Civic Arena won’t be decommissioned as an ice surface until at least this fall.

Director of Recreational Services Doug Ross says the 80 year old facility — which hosted its final junior game between the Vipers and Prince George over the weekend — will be used for ice activities until the end of the spring.

After that, he says the city will keep it operational until the fall, just in case the new arena at Kal Tire Place isn’t done by then.

“We don’t anticipate that, especially with how well the project is going at Kal Tire Place, but we will be keeping the Civic Arena ready just in case it’s needed in the fall,” Ross tells Beach Radio News.

The 400 seat, 13 million dollar new arena is on schedule to be ready by September 1st.

City council is getting cost estimates on demolishing the 80 year old Civic, after determining it would be too costly to upgrade it for another purpose.
