New Recreation Plan Studied For Greater Vernon

Jan 5, 2018 | 7:57 AM

Recreation services in Greater Vernon is getting its first review and upgrade in 14 years.

Work on a new master plan will start later this month.

The city’s Recreational Services Director Doug Ross told Greater Vernon Advisory directors, it will focus on future needs for facilities and programming.

“What this will do for us, it will be a road map for us moving forward, certainly for the next five years, but it will also look in a ten year window, and then do visioning out to fifteen years.”

Ross notes that the vision is not just centralized.

“Through the fee for service agreement, the City of Vernon is responsible for recreation services, but this isn’t just the City of Vernon’s recreation master plan. This is the master plan for Greater Vernon.”

Ross says RC Strategies and GDH Solutions have been hired to guide the process.

“They’re very well known in the recreation community. They’ve done, I believe, it’s over 1,500 master plans for communities throughout Canada, but certainly mostly, I think, in BC and Alberta,” says Ross.

Public input will be a big part of it, with a kick-off event to be held later this month
