New Owners For Restaurant

Jan 3, 2018 | 5:39 PM

Vernon’s Little Tex won’t be closing after all.

The restaurant on 29th Street — which has built up a loyal customer base over almost three decades — has new owners in Lavington residents Shamis and Tracy Burrell.

Tracy says they’re excited to carry on the tradition — and do what they love.

“The biggest thing people are asking me is to not change the menu, so we really want to hold to the tradition.”

However, she says they will invite people to suggest popular items from year’s past that will be brought back, such as Mexican corn chowder.

Shamis says the former owners are working with them to make the transition smoother.

“They will work with us for a while so that we can feel out what they’ve been doing and the energy and the food they’ve been putting out, and then we’ll look at maybe what past customers and the community have enjoyed and is interested in, and maybe shift up the menu a little bit.”

The Burrell’s decided to make an offer after hearing the previous owners were unable to find new buyers, and planned to close it after 27 years.

“We grew up in Enderby, and for the past 15 years, we we’re in the Kootenays. We moved back here three or four years ago to take care of family. I’ve been doing construction for the past couple of years, but I’ve got years of cooking experience, and this opportunity came up and my wife and I have been talking for years about opening a restaurant,” says Shamis.
