Warmer and Drier 2017

Jan 3, 2018 | 12:38 PM

Vernon’s weather was slightly warmer — and quite a bit drier than normal — in 2017.

The year end stats have been released by Environment Canada.

“For Vernon, it came out about a half a degree above average for the entire year. 8.1 (Celsius) was the average temperature for the year. It’s usually 7.7, and we had about 77 percent of the average precipitation,” says meteorologist Doug Lundquist.

Lundquist says Vernon received 376 milimetres of rain or snow last year, down from the normal 500.

He says the drier than normal summer was the main reason for that.

Kelowna’s average temperature in 2017 was 8.8 degrees, above the usual 8.1, with 70 percent of the average precipitation.

“It was the fourth driest year on record going back to 1969,” says Lundquist.

Kelowna received 272 milimetres of rain or snow, down from the usual 387.
