Vernon Mayor Pleased With 2017

Looking back at 2017, Vernon Mayor Akbal Mund thinks the city has been very active in making some big decisions.

There is still one issue he’s anxious to get resolved.

The city made the commitment to move forward with Kin Race Track.

“Taking that through litigation and we should probably hear hopefully mid-March sometime the judge’s decision on that one. That’s a very big decision. As you know that project has basically sat there and hasn’t been dealt with for probably over a decade.”

Final arguments in the court case between the city and the Okanagan Equestrian Society took place in BC Supreme Court In New Westminster in September.

Another point of contention has been public access sites on Okanagan Lake are among them.

“Another big decision this year is we’ve decided what we’re doling with the airport and it’s not going to grow anymore than it is now. That decision was made. We’re moving ahead with the arts and culture new centre.”

Mund admits that will probably when up in a referendum when the civic election is held next October.

Public safety also paramount.

“One of the priorities obviously is the safety of the community with increased RCMP and more equipment for fire services. we moved the eight year plan for them. You’ll see more staffing at fire hall number 2.”

Priorities for 2018 include completing plans to bring parks such as Paddlewheel, Kin and DND and Marshall Fields back into the Vernon fold.
