Vernon Mayor Hopes Homelessness Eases In 2018

Homelessness is probably the biggest issue that resonated with people in Vernon this year.

Mayor Akbal Mund says he hopes people don`t lose focus on it.

“It’s not an issue that’s ever going to go away. It’s always going to be there. You know, some people chose to be out there. I know it’s something the city will continue to work on, BC Housing, provincial Government, federal government.”

Mund is hopeful 2018 will see fewer issues with government supported housing coming on stream.

He says the issues are still going to exist, hopefully on a smaller scale.

“Some people are never going to want housing, but talking to all the experts out there, to treat some of these people it starts with housing and that’s the key. It’s something we’ve been lacking in the community.”

The Mayor says he believes Vernon is heading in the right direction

But he says we shouldn’t expect tent cities to disappear.

” I think you’ll still see areas, whether they’re as large as what we’ve seen in the past, likely not. But you’ll still see tent cities, sure.”

Mund says it`s unrealistic to think you`ll never run into a homeless person on the street.
