Lake Country Wants No Repeat Of 2017 Disasters

Dec 27, 2017 | 7:27 AM

Lake Country Mayor James Baker says 2017 was a stretch year for the community.

Like much of the Okanagan, it had to deal with an unprecedented spring flood.

“It’s not often staff are working 24 – 7 but that was the case. a number did with the floods and the emergency operations centre.”

Baker says the centre went the longest ever in Lake Country’s history.

The summer also brought the Okanagan Centre fire that destroyed a number of homes.

It did bring to light the need to do more to prevent something similar in the future.

“We recognize the threat of our interface and are doing mitigation to ensure that wildfire isn’t as devastating  as what’s happening in California right now, still”

Baker says the city has a good relationship with the province and the volunteer fire department is well-trained in preparing for another interface fire
