Preventing Another Flood High on Lumby Agenda

Dec 27, 2017 | 7:21 AM

2017 was a year Lumby Mayor Kevin Acton will look back on as en experience to grow from.

He says this year’s flood was devastating for the village and there’s still a lot of work to come to prevent the downtown core from future threats.

“We’re still working together with the province on it and have lots of good men and women working for the village. It’s going to take some patience but I think in the long run it’s going to be of benefit for Lumby, that’s for sure.”

Acton says Lumby has had flood issues in the past, but it seems the events are coming more frequently.

“First it was one in five years, then it was one in two years. You know it’s coming every second year now kind of thing. two years prior we had been through a whole process with the government trying out these new Gabion diking systems, spent a million and a half dollars putting them in and taking them out.”

Acton admits there isn’t a lot of time to get a new plan in place to prepare for next spring.

“All Throughout the winter here we’ve got engineer crews working on flood mapping, flood plain. We bought that property at the head of the village hoping that might be able to do some water mitigation through maybe some wetlands or something.”

He says climate change is an issue, never mind it just getting hotter, but more extreme.

“So more extremes in dryness, more extremes in wetness, more extremes in amount of precipitation in one time. We’re already seeing patterns of that.”

Acton says it’s time to think about the future and waste less money doing temporary things are start getting on the ball and doing some permanent fixes.
