Mission Serves Early Christmas Dinner

Dec 22, 2017 | 10:21 AM

Vernon’s less fortunate residents will be treated to a special Christmas dinner this afternoon.

The Upper Room Mission on 27th Avenue will open its doors for a complimentary dinner at 4 pm.

“That’s also when we’ll be handing out our Christmas backpacks to everyone, so it’s a really special night, says the Mission’s co-executive director Lisa Anderson.

As of earlier this week, Anderson said they had 138 backpacks, which are donated by residents, and contain small gifts and essential everyday items like socks, gloves and toothbrushes.

“Last year we got over 700 backpacks, so we’re a little bit short this year, but we’re hoping the city pulls through and we’ll have enough backpacks.”

Anderson says they are expecting a big crowd.

“We are preparing for 250 people, but we’ll see.”

Anderson says attendees will be treated to a ham dinner with all the trimmings.
