Vernon Regional Transit Service has been suspended on several routes until further notice due to severe weather conditions.

The City says service will resume once conditions improve.

UPDATE 4 pm:

There has been a few accidents on Vernon area roads in the last hour as the snow continues to fall.

One involved a car hitting a semi on 11th Ave and Waddington Drive.

RCMP were not aware of any serious incidents so far.

BC Transit says its buses are currently unable to travel on some roads on routes 1, 2, 6, 8 and 90.

People are being encouraged not to drive unless they have to, with snowfall and travel advisories in effect for all of southern BC.

The North Okanagan could see as much as 25 centimetres by Wednesday, while the mountain passes could be blanketed by 40 cm’s.

Drive BC says there is heavy snowfall with extremely limited visibility on the Coquihalla and the Connector.

The Coke is closed to southbound traffic between Merritt and Hope because of spun out commercial vehicles.

RCMP are advising drivers stay off the Coquihalla today and to consider other routes to and from the Interior if driving is absolutely necessary.

Highway 1 west of Kamloops is closed due to a vehicle incident.

There has also been delays and cancellations at the Kelowna Airport — as director Sam Samadar outlines.

“With the weather here and elsewhere in Victoria and Vancouver for example, we’ve had six flight cancellations, so six arrivals which means the corresponding outbound flights have also been cancelled,” Samadar tells Beach Radio News.

Vancouver and Victoria are also expected to get five to 15 centimetres of snow.
