Vernon Mayor Wants Equal Split Of Marijuana Sales Revenue

Dec 18, 2017 | 7:25 AM

Vernon’s mayor thinks municipalities should get at least half of the province’s share of marijuana tax revenue.

Ottawa has agreed to give the provinces 75 percent of the money that comes in once pot becomes legal next July, up from the earlier 50 percent.

Akbal Mund says cities should push the Horgan government Victoria for 37.7 percent.

“I believe they will look at it and make the right decisions, and maybe we’ll get a split of that money. I believe most municipalities around the province would be very happy with that.”

Mund says towns and cities will need the revenue to cover extra policing and bylaws created by the new law.

“The feds have already figured out they won’t be involved in the process that much, and I think the province is going to realize who is going to enforce all this. It’s going to be the municipalities.”
