Pocket Ashtrays Encouraged In Lumby

Dec 18, 2017 | 7:12 AM

The Village of Lumby may link up with a local man promoting the idea of distributing pocket ashtrays around the community.

Jack Ellimen sees them as a way to reduce tobacco litter and possibly prevent fires.

Mayor Kevin Acton says it’s a unique idea.

” So they’re like a little oil pouch that seals when you close it, kind of like a dry bag in a tiny form. It has some fancy artwork on it or you can put your logo on it.”

Council will look at the idea again after getting a better idea on pricing and discussion on how to utilize them.

” We discussed about putting a community forest logo on there and stop forest fire advertisement and maybe the community.”

Kevin Acton says other areas like Vancouver and North Vancouver have already adopted the program.

“Their bylaw officer packs them around with him and if he sees somebody that’s smoking and throwing their cigarettes on the ground he’ll go up and take the opportunity to  give them some education on where they should be smoking or shouldn’t be smoking and about littering.”

He then hands over a pocket ashtray.

Acton also sees it as an opportunity to support a local entrepreneur.
