Arena Upgrade On Hold

Dec 14, 2017 | 10:00 AM

Lumby is still waiting to hear on grant money to help with the renovation of Pat Duke Arena.

The rebuild fund is over 180 thousand dollars when combined with the 100 thousand dollar Hockeyville grant.

Mayor Kevin Acton admits it’s taking a long time to put things together.

“We’re still pursuing a grant for the arena to add to the money that was won from Hockeyville. It’s been put away and added to for the last year. We’re still waiting to hear from the government on that one.”

Acton hopes to hear something shortly so work can go ahead on a design for the work.

“It’s hard and it’s really hard for people to wait because, you know we won that money and a hundred thousand dollars sounds like a lot of money and everybody, including myself, wishes that we just would go on and build these women’s changing rooms, but it’s not a lot of money and it won’t get us very far.”

Acton says it’s important to get the extra funds in order to do a proper job for the community.

“The 700 thousand dollar option compared to the 2.6 million dollar option is very different, so it’s not like we can start one and switch gears and move to the other if we received the grant. They are completely different ideas.”

Acton says there is no sense in throwing good money after bad and finding out money is available for the better plan.

The upgrade would include change rooms for women and upgraded washroom faculties, and hopefully a gym or multi-purpose workout room.
