School Meningitis Update

Dec 13, 2017 | 2:02 PM

Interior Health says no new cases of meningitis have been reported in the Greater Vernon area.

That’s a relief for parents and health officials after a 16 year old female student at Kalamalka Secondary recently contracted a severe case of the virus.

The girl is said to be in a medically-induced coma in hospital.

Interior Health will be providing vaccinations to students at the Coldstream school Thursday.

Medical health officer Dr. Karin Goodison says while the risk to the general population is low, they’re providing the shots to reduce the spread of infection.

“We are advising all students at Kalamalka Secondary School to get immunized with the Meningococcal Quadrivalent vaccine (Men-C-ACYW-135). This vaccine has been offered to grade nine students at this school for the last two years. Anyone who has not received this vaccine would not have appropriate protection,” says Goodison.

The medical health officer says individuals who have symptoms like fever, headache, stiff neck, or vomiting should seek medical attention immediately.
