Open Season For Election Signs In Vernon

Dec 12, 2017 | 5:17 AM

Signs, signs…everywhere a sign.

That could be the case next fall in Vernon after council decided not to limit where civic election signs could be placed.

The city will will allow candidate signs on public land — once the election is called — as long as they’re not impacting traffic or sight lines.

Councillor Brian Quiring says it doesn’t make sense to have bylaws officers trying to enforce the rules.

“We’ve had people running for mayor putting their signs up illegally. Everybody does it, It’s an election. And bylaw has more important things to deal with than chasing these signs down and asking people to come and pick them up,” says Quiring.

Mayor Akbal Mund wanted to see more control of the signs.

He says it doesn’t look good, and notes he only posted signs on private land — with the owners’ consent — during the last election, which will still be allowed in 2018.
