‘Pot Pie’ May Be Sliced Differently

BC towns and cities may get a slice of the marijuana revenue pie after all.

Public safety minister Mike Farnworth is pleased to hear Ottawa may be willing to reconsider the 50-50 split in tax revenues.

“My understanding they are talking about additional revenue in terms of local governments. That’s something we want to see happen because it’s between the provinces and  local governments who is going to be bearing the brunt of the costs around the implement of cannabis legalization,” says Farnworth.

Farnworth says Ottawa’s initial 50-50 offer was viewed as just an “opening negotiation” by the provinces.

It’s estimated the excise tax on pot could bring in one billion dollars a year for governments to share.

The issue is expected to be discussed when Finance Minister Bill Morneau meets next week with provincial ministers.
