Vernon Legion Poppy Sales On Target

Nov 21, 2017 | 7:04 AM

Vernon’s Royal Canadian Legion is the latest group finding it harder to attract volunteers.

Branch President Bill Balcaen says that was the case with their poppy campaign this fall which produced about 40-thousand dollars, roughly the same as last year.

“Everyone that volunteered was very sincere. We just don’t have enough people that want to sit in a store. And we don’t ask many of them to stand outside anymore because it’s not a popular thing,” Balcaen tells Kiss FM.

The funds will be used for programs and to help veterans.

“We had a super response but we were short of volunteers. We did our average, which is around 40-thousand, and we have exceeded 40-thousand, so we are grateful for that.”

Balcaen says it won’t cause any hardships, and their programs to help veterans will be able to continue.

Kelowna’s Legion set a new record with their campaign — with 184-thousand dollars.
