Shanda Hill Hits The Finish Line

Aug 28, 2017 | 10:48 AM

Vernon’s Shanda Hill has successfully completed the Deca Ultratriathlon in Switzerland.

The race features a 38 kilometre swim, 1800 kilometre bike ride and 422 kilometre run

Shanda tells Kiss FM it was amazing.

“We were fortunate enough. We had very hot days, 36 degrees in 50 per cent humidity and it was quite cool at night and a lot of headwinds. But it was really great.”

Shanda finished 2nd female, 8th among the 16 finishers and becomes only the 6th woman in the history of the triathlon to finish it.

She says the toughest part was facing the headwinds during the bicycle portion.

“Because the bike course was fairly flat, but there was a headwind going out and in the afternoon the headwind would change and then it would come back. So you always felt like you were being pushed backwards a little bit.”

Shanda says the support from everyone back in Vernon was fantastic.

“I want to thank them so much because I had no idea the overwhelming support. My mother would phone me and she would tell me, so and so asked to pass on this message. It’s beautiful. I feel so grateful to live in a place like Vernon that has so much support like that.”

She says she’s going to rest up before flying back home September 5th.

She has no idea what’s next on her agenda but says there’s always something down the road.
